Just before they'd left the station, a werewolf had mauled a human in the park, and two lizard demons tried to break into the bank on Spectrum Avenue. London kept saying it was going to be a bitch of a night, and it certainly looked like he was right on the mark.
Salena turned off the main drag and rumbled down three back roads. They hit several holes, and Pascal winced as tiny rocks flew up and hit the vehicle.
"Shit!" London yelled from the back seat. "Are you trying to hit every hole?"
"It's not as if I can see," she muttered.
"Pascal can," London pointed out. "Can't you direct
her with your x-ray vision?" Pascal turned to look at him and frowned. "I don't have x-ray vision."
"It's creepy as hell out here."
Salena slowed down. "We can't go much farther with the car. The road ends here."
"You mean we have to go on foot?" London asked.
The vehicle was brought to a standstill. "Yes. We have to go through those woods there," she said, jumping out of the car.
London clicked on his flashlight.
"No flashlight," Salena said. "You'll scare them off."
"Oh," London replied. "How am I…?"
Pascal reached out and grabbed his sleeve. "I'll guide you."
"Brilliant." London wrenched his arm away.
Pascal moved his face close to London's. "Hold my sleeve or my hand, your choice."
London clutched his arm. "Go ahead."
They entered the brush. Salena led the way. There were trees on either side of them, and Pascal saw many creatures hiding in the woods. London stumbled along beside him. It was probably better that London couldn't see what he saw—a colony of miniature wood nymphs with hostile expressions, fairies fluttering together in little groups, all manner of demons who were too hideous to show themselves in the light of day.
Salena put up a hand suddenly. "Wait. Stay here. There's someone I can talk to."
"Stay where?" London whispered.
"Shush," Pascal told London, holding on to him. Around them the trees created a cocoon of green. Shadows and various sounds and smells invaded Pascal's senses. If he let it, it could completely overpower him. He was ever aware of London beside him, and it aggravated the ache that was growing inside of him. He didn't want to feel anything for this human, but he did anyway. He knew he shouldn't be thinking about anything but finding this witch right now, but with London breathing in his ear, it was hard to concentrate. The sounds and smells around him receded, and the only thing left was London, his smile, his voice, the way his mouth had felt on his sex earlier. "London," he said softly.
"What?" London's voice was surprisingly calm.
"You're not afraid, are you?"
"Afraid?"
"Yeah." Pascal looked at him. He had the advantage of being able to see London's face. He was glad London couldn't see his.
"What should I be afraid of? Is something going to jump out of the bushes and grab me?"
Pascal reached out and touched London's cheek. "Maybe."
"What are you… doing?" London asked, but he didn't move away.
"You are so beautiful.
